BR 1-06: The Dragon and the Phoenix

"The pearl shone brighter than stars......brighter than the sun." (Sims, 2009, p.18)

This story is based on The Bright Pearl, a folktale from China.
In Chinese stories, dragons and Phoenix are often shown together.
Chinese dragons have lots of magical powers and can even fly without wings.

This is the story of Dragon Mountain, Phoenix Mountain and a shining lake.
It begins thousands of years ago, in China...
Long, long ago, a dragon lived beside a magic river.
Deep inside a dark forest that grew on the other side of the river lived a phoenix.
One day, they met on an island in the river.
A shiny pebble lay on the sand.
The dragon washed it in the river and the phoenix polished it with a feather.
And the pebble became a pearl.
They stayed on the island.. watching the pearl.
What will happen to the pearl?

This story is retold by Lesley Sims. This is in the Usborne First Reading series.
It's a level 2 book, so it is short story (about 25 pages) and easy to read.
This story is interesting. lol
